Throughout 2016, Twitter has been a vessel to discuss the most current and significant topics in Indonesia. 

Currently, users are recalling the wide variety of topics brought up during this past year using the hashtag #RamaiDiTwitter, which translates to crowded or noisy on Twitter. 

Twitter Indonesia country business head Roy Simangunsong says the most popular topics Indonesian netizens discussed in 2016 were Ramadhan and sports achievements. On Tuesday, he pointed out to tempo.co that one of the largest contributors to the Ramadhan theme on Twitter this year was Indonesia.

Here are Indonesian Twitter's 10 most popular topics for the year. 

1. The holy month of Ramadhan

During Ramadhan, Indonesians took to Twitter to express witty trivialities and remarks on their fasting experiences, while also sharing iftar (breaking-of-the-fast meal) food recipes and religious quotes approaching the three days of Idul Fitri.

2. The victory of badminton athletes Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir at the #Rio2016 Olympics

The victory of the two badminton stars at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil, only minutes before the end of the nation’s Independence Day on Aug. 17 in Indonesia escalated into a moment of euphoria on Twitter. Users supported and championed the two athletes, congratulating Tontowi and Liliyana with the hashtag #OwiButetBisaEmas.

3. The 71st birthday of the Indonesian Republic

On the day when patriotism peaks in the hearts of all Indonesians, Twitter exploded when President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo broadcasted the flag raising ceremony at the National Palace via Periscope. 

4. Sarinah terrorist attack

On Jan. 14, Jakarta was struck by terror with the Sarinah bombings and shootings that triggered the spread of alarming information, both true and false through social media. Regardless, Indonesian netizens stood strong against the incident and generated an attitude of fearlessness through the hashtag #KamiTidakTakut, #PrayForJakarta and #SafetyCheckJkt.

5. Euro 2016

Although only involving European soccer teams, Twitter in Indonesia still leaned in to support and criticize Euro 2016 from start to finish using the hashtag #Euro2016.

6. Total solar eclipse

This rare natural phenomena drew a lot of attention among Indonesian netizens, as various reports from the many cities that witnessed the total solar eclipse in March were shared via Twitter. 

7. Love BTS

Twitter has become a bowl overflowing with Indonesian fandom for K-pop girl and boy bands, with BTS aka Bangtan Boys being one of the hottest topics in 2016. 

8. Timnas (national team) Indonesia 

Netizens' support of Indonesia’s national soccer team never fails to flood Twitter timelines every time the team plays a match. 

9. Bombings in Medina

The tragic bombing incident in Medina provoked netizens to express their grief and condolences to the victims of the attack. 

10. Persib (West Javanese soccer team) matches

Similar to the ruckus Timnas support brings to Twitter, Persib also rouses the spirit and support of fans via Twitter every time they play. (mra/kes)
