A

screening of documentary Street Punk! Banda Aceh by journalist Maria Bakkalapulo and producer Niall Macaulay has piqued the interest of film-goers in London.

The film is being screened as part of the Films of the Archipelago, an Indonesian film festival at Deptford Cinema, a community-based theater in the southeastern part of London, that lasts until March 26. It tells the story of teenagers who are members of a punk community in Banda Aceh, Sumatra, 11 years ago after the tsunami.

“The film is very interesting. It was unimaginable that there would be a group of Western-styled teenagers in Aceh, [a place] that is culturally very strict,” said film-goer Grabiella as quoted by Antara news agency last week.

Lenah Susianty, one of the festival initiators, said Indonesian film was not well known in the UK. She said only few films had been screened at cinemas in the country, such as The Raid by Gareth Evans.

Lenah said the festival was created to test the UK market. “I'm happy to see that there are quite a lot of British viewers. [To have the film viewed by locals] is our target,” she said, adding that it was time for Indonesian films to be in the spotlight in foreign countries as many of them were good.

Other films to be screened at the event include Jilbab Selfie (Selfie Hijab), Jalanan (The Streets), Maryam, Lovely Man, Headshot and Pintu Terlarang (Forbidden Door). (mas/kes)
