Online class platform MasterClass offers instruction by celebrities.
From featuring actor Steve Martin and composer Hans Zimmer to Chef Gordon Ramsay, the website describes itself as offering “affordable, engaging and inspirational online courses curated by world class instructors”. For US$90 a class, students are said to be able to learn at their own pace, from those who know best.
Here are four interesting classes that you could be taking right now, plus one that will be made available soon.
Gordon Ramsey Teaches Cooking
Celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsey, the host of popular cooking shows Hell’s Kitchen and Masterchef, will take his students into his “home kitchen”, according to the MasterClass website. The seven-star Michelin chef teaches 20 video lessons, starting with the basics, like how to make perfect poached eggs, to how to make your own pasta. Students of this class will also get a class workbook featuring recipes.

Aaron Sorkin Teaches Screenwriting
In 35 lessons, Aaron Sorkin, the writer of television shows like The West Wing and movies like The Social Network, will teach you his tricks behind creating unforgettable stories and characters. Students will get a look into what it took to create The West Wing, while also breaking down the episodes. A 38-page workbook comes with the class, and Sorkin himself will offer feedback and critique of student work.
Usher: The Art of Performance
In his first ever online class, Usher breaks down the technical skills as well as the lessons he has learned throughout his career. The eight-time Grammy Award winner will teach students not only how to sing and ready your voice, but will cover everything from dancing and acting on stage to creating a personal brand through social media.

Serena Williams: Drills, Tips and Techniques
If you prefer the tennis court to the kitchen or the stage, this two-hour course taught by Serena Williams is for you. With lessons ranging from “controlling the court” to “mastering the serve”, you can learn from one of the world’s best tennis players. In addition to lessons, students of this class will get a workbook with an even more in-depth look at the science behind serves.
Shonda Rhimes Teaches Writing for Television
The mind behind iconic shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder is here to teach you how to write for television. Unlike the other classes, Rhimes’ class is still only open for pre-enrollment but will be available in coming months. “You’ll also get her pilot scripts, pitch notes and story bible,” promises the MasterClass website, along with five hours of video lessons and the opportunity to have questions answered by Rhimes herself.
