Meghan Markle opens up about her relationship with Prince Harry

A year into Meghan Markle’s relationship with Prince Harry and she finally, candidly, opened up about him on her cover story for Vanity Fair. I got particularly engrossed as I have been watching The Story of Diana for the past few days, so it felt like this story was so timely.

In the interview set in Meghan’s Toronto home, she shares about the struggles that come with the heightened interest in her life. Ever since her relationship with Prince Harry blew up on the Internet, she’s been a subject of scrutiny and invasion of privacy to a point that Kensington Palace had to release a statement to have the media back off. They didn’t.

“It has its challenges, and it comes in waves—some days it can feel more challenging than others,” she says about the media. “And right out of the gate it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.”

With all the horrible news that come out in tabloids and the dissection of every detail in her life and relationship, how does she deal? “I can tell you that at the end of the day I think it’s really simple. We’re two people who are really happy and in love,” she said. “We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception. Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”

“I don’t read any press. I haven’t even read press for Suits,” she adds.“The people who are close to me anchor me in knowing who I am. The rest is noise.”

When she was asked more about the object of her affection, I can imagine her gush just like any other girl being asked about her boyfriend. “We’re a couple,” she explains. “We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”
