The Association of Indonesia Movie Production (PPFI) has selected Turah to represent Indonesia in the 2018 Academy Awards.
Announced on Tuesday, actress Christine Hakim, the association’s head of selection committee, said that Turah was chosen by the committee for the award Best Foreign Language Film category.
Following the country selection, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will then choose the final nominees for this category.
Kompas.com reported Turah was selected among 130 local films.

Christine mentioned that Turah's strength lies on its honesty and simplicity, which applies in both theme and development. The movie was said to carry a strong message, particularly in moral values, which delivers in honest and humble ways.
Christine further added although the movie does not feature famous actors, the performance is remarkable.
Directed by Wicaksono Wisnu Legowo, the 83-minute drama seeks to investigate poverty issue in Central Java. The movie is set in Tirang village, Tegal, Central Java, and it features characters speaking in a local dialect of the Javanese language.
Prior to this, Turah reportedly won two awards at the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF) and received a special mention at the 27th Singapore International Film Festival. (jes/asw)
