s Halloween that falls on Oct. 31 is just around the corner, the Kineforum cinema café in Taman Ismail Marzuki, Central Jakarta, is set to present a horror-themed program called Parade Teror (A Parade of Terror) from Oct. 12 to 25, featuring 14 films that is set to spike up your adrenaline and leave you squirming in your seat.
Thematically, the films are classified into three main sub-themes: Bala Hawa (misfortune brought by women) that explores how horror stories embody fear of women, from witches to female ghoules; Wabah Petaka (an epidemic of disasters) that will allow viewers to imagine how contagious fear can be and how, when it spreads, can paralyze the whole of society and Cermin Retak (cracked mirror) that explores the motivation behind people who like to spread fear and terror in others.

Films featured under the Bala Hawa category include Swedish film The Circle (2015, directed by Levan Akin), that follows a group of high school students who discover that they are actually witches; Indonesian Lukisan Berlumur Darah (Blood-stained Painting; 1988, directed by Torro Margens) that tells the story of how a painting becomes a medium where vengeance and grudges linger in a group of restless spirits.
On Wabah Petaka, audience will get to watch, among other films, the New Order regime’s propaganda film Pengkhianatan Gerakan 30 September (The September 30 Betrayal; 1984, directed by Arifin C. Noer) and see how the film was used to instill fear and violence in the minds of a generation of Indonesians growing up during that period.
Cermin Retak, meanwhile, will include the screening of American film Nightcrawler (2014, directed by Dan Gilroy), that presents the scary prospect of a sociopath working as a journalist. (kes)
