Horror films are unique in terms of arrangements prior to shooting. Director Billy Christian says that preparations involve shamans and snake charmers.
orror films have long been popular in Indonesia. From the iconic Suzanna series to the newest phenomenon, a remake of Pengabdi Setan (Satan's Slave) helmed by Joko Anwar, they are mostly met with enthusiasm. Pengabdi Setan even ranked as 2017’s most-watched movie, according to Film Indonesia.
Horror films are also unique in terms of arrangements held prior to shooting.
Indonesian director Billy Christian, with several horror films under his belt, told Tempo that the preparations would involve shamans and snake charmers.
The preparations are needed as it is not uncommon for several crew members to become disturbed during production.

Horror films sets usually take place in unsettling locations, with dark surroundings and often infested with snakes and other creatures.
Billy also said that exhaustion and stress could be a factor.
During the Petak Umpet Minako movie shoot, two crew members were apparently possessed and had to be taken care of by paranormal specialists, he said.
Billy added that unusual make up and location settings in horror films meant high production costs. “A single production can cost around Rp 3 billion to Rp 3.5 billion (US$ 217,800 to 254,100) at least,” he said.
Billy’s latest feat is The Mannequins, slated to be released this year. (wng)
