Actor Amoroso Katamsi died on Tuesday at the age of 77, as reported by kompas.com.

His son Doddy Katamsi, who is a rock singer, posted the news on his Facebook account.

“Amoroso Katamsi has passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at 1:40 a.m.”

The actor was best known for his role as former president Soeharto in Pengkhianatan G30S/PKI (Betrayal of the Communists, 1984). Directed by Arifin C. Aside from acting in dozens of movies, Katamsi was again cast as Soeharto in Djakarta 1966 (1982) and Di Balik 98 (Behind 1998, 2015).

According to Tempo, he started acting by joining poet and artist W. S. Rendra’s theater group in Yogyakarta in 1961, then joining the Teater Kecil owned by Noer.

During his life, Katamsi was also known as a doctor and a naval officer. He graduated from Gadjah Mada University’s Faculty of Medicine in 1966, according to the Film Indonesia website.

Katamsi had three children with Pranawengrum Katamsi, a renowned soprano singer, who died in 2006.

Ratna Arumsari, the eldest, is known as a pianist. Second-born Doddy joined rock band Elpamas in the 1990s and is now a singer with Kantata Band. He also leads a solo career as a singer and teaches vocal lessons. Third child Aning Katamsi, following in the footsteps of her mother, is a soprano. (wng)
