ixteen-year-old Maria Simorangkir has been crowned the winner of Indonesian Idol, a reality television singing competition that is adopted from the UK’s Pop Idol.
Daniel Mananta, the show’s host, announced the winner early on Tuesday morning during the “Result & Reunion Show Indonesian Idol 2018" event in Jakarta, where Maria was accompanied by fellow contestant Ahmad Abdul on the stage.
As winner, Maria will bring home the prizes of Rp 150 million (US$10,807) and a car.

During her performance on the show, she collaborated with renowned singer Sandhy Sondoro performing “Tak Pernah Padam” (Never Dies) and a “Gejolak Cinta” (Glory of Love) medley, while Abdul sang “Kasih Putih” (White Love) and a “Hikayat Cintaku” (My Love Story) medley with pop singer Glenn Fredly.
As the youngest participant in the ninth season of the show, Maria has been praised for having a powerful voice and she often mesmerized the judges, namely Judika, Armand Maulana, Maia Estianty, Bunga Citra Lestari and Ari Lasso.
Many netizens have been mesmerized as well, with a recent video of her performance during the Result & Reunion Show, where she sang Destiny's Child "Stand Up for Love", so far being viewed more than 1.5 million times on YouTube.
According to Antara, Maria previously entered the top five of children’s singing competition Idol Junior 2014. (wir/kes)
