nternational-scale auto shows are known for introducing new concept cars for the future and the recent Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) is no exception.

At the event, which took place at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) in Tangerang from Aug. 2 to 12, Toyota brought its Tokyo Motor Show 2017 Concept-i Series.

The series comprise the Concept-i, iRide and i-Walk.

The concept vehicles, designed for the future, are capable of interacting with drivers by means of artificial intelligence (AI) technology that understands driver behavior and its environment.

The Toyota Concept-i was first introduced at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, the United States, in early January 2017. The Concept-i is generally very futuristic in its exterior and interior designs, which have scissor-shaped doors while retaining its steering mechanism, enabling the four-seater to be conventionally driven.

Apart from its unique appearance, the car is intelligent because of its AI and automated driving technology, combined with the latest safety systems, including dynamic radar cruise control (DRCC), lane trace control (LTC) and predictive and interactive human machine interface (HMI). It also comes with new connectivity technology that uses the driver’s information from social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter and GPS technology. Adding to the futuristic features of this Toyota is a system of intelligence that detects the driver’s emotional state by analyzing facial expressions, body movements and tones of speech. While under stress, for instance, the system can offer access to entertainment options preferred by the driver. The Concept-i is 4,150 millimeters in length, 1,830 mm in width and 1,475 mm high, with a capacity of four passengers. Its propellant chamber is equipped with an electric motor, with a battery that enables for a cruising range of 300 kilometers.

The second vehicle, the i-Ride, resembles a European Smart car, but with doors that use a design called “falcon wings”. Unlike ordinary cars, the i-Ride eliminates the steering wheel, brake and gas pedals. Instead, a joystick is provided to facilitate the operation. Furthermore, a personalized instrument screen fully adopts driverless technology. Designed as an urban twoseater, the i-Ride allows anyone to travel and operate the vehicle, including wheelchair users. Only 2,500 mm long, 1,500 mm high and 1,300 mm wide, this electric car is able to cover a distance of 100 km with a fully-charged battery.

The third vehicle, the i-Walk, allows for transportation to where cars are denied access. It looks like a Segway, but it is more compact and easier to ride. Designed for use on pedestrian lanes, the i-Walk requires the user to stand up to operate it.

Despite its simple model, this threewheeled vehicle also has safety and security technology to detect dangers and actively give warnings in the face of stones, holes or inundations on the road. It is an electric vehicle for personal mobility and can cruise at a speed of 10 to 20 km per hour.

The Toyota i-Series is meant to usher in a new era of global mobility and fulfill Toyota’s commitment to always prioritize the development of vehicles that serve not only to facilitate transportation but also offer greater freedom and joy to their owners.
