Some users could be found sharing screenshots of their most memorable moments on Path via Instagram, while others said thank you through the hashtag #terimakasihPath on Twitter, which became a top trending topic on Twitter Indonesia, reported kompas.com.

Regarding the news, social media observer Nukman Luthfie said on Monday that the social network had made a mistake when it disavowed its own concept.

Launched in November 2010, Path made changes to its signature friend restriction feature from only 50 friends per user to 500 in 2014, reportedly due to pressure from Indonesian users that were said to be its biggest market. Many had found the move disappointing as the feature was actually the one thing that made them attracted to Path and considered it a more personal app compared to Facebook and Twitter.

Nukman also told kompas.com that Path had not come up with any innovations, while its competitors like Instagram and Snapchat had various new and fresh features. "It did not have additional features to anticipate the rise of Snapchat and the growth of Instagram," he added.

Now that Path is gone, users who are looking for a similar service might try out Vero, a photo-sharing platform that is said to be a combination of Path and Instagram.

Quite popular among users in the United States, Vero was introduced in 2015 and boasts itself as a unique social network that allows users to share content with specific friends, free of ads and features posts in a chronological feed instead of an algorithm-controlled one, reported businessinsider.sg.

Founded by 39-year-old billionaire Ayman Hariri, son of the late Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri, Vero is quite similar to other social networks, however it lets you decide how you want to classify a new connection whenever you are accepting a friend request or adding a new contact. Other than the default "Acquaintance", you can also classify them as "Friends" or "Close friends".

Another feature of Vero is that you can set each post as totally private, completely public or shared with a selected group of friends. As previously mentioned, it's also free of ads as it relies on a subscription model. However, it is said to currently offer its first million users a free subscription for life.

Amid its popularity, Vero has also been entangled in controversy, such as overwhelmed servers due to the arrival of millions of new users and upsets surrounding its terms of service.

Only time will tell whether Indonesian users will fall for Vero's highlighted features. Those interested of trying this app can download it for free on the App Store and the Google Play Store. (kes)
