ollowing the 7.4-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that devastated Palu, Donggala and the surrounding areas in Central Sulawesi on Friday evening, the region's infrastructure was also shattered, including internet, telephone and SMS service.
Efforts have been made to recover these communication facilities, especially in vital areas, reported kompas.com on Monday. State telecommunications company PT Telkom, mobile operator Telkomsel and state-owned electricity company PLN have reportedly provided free Wi-Fi access points, as well as telephone and SMS service for Palu, Donggala and the surrounding areas.
PT Telkom's free internet service is available using the Wifi.id network for areas that were affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

Using "TelkomPeduli" SSID, residents can access free internet at Wi-Fi access points at the following Telkom offices in Palu, Donggala, Ampana, Banggai, Luwuk, Marisa, Parigi and Poso:
Telkom's senior vice president of external communication, Puja Pramono, said the internet connection at the Telkom office was quite reliable for video calling via WhatsApp. "I've tried it myself; I could make a video call with it," he told KompasTekno on Sunday.
Free telephone and SMS facilities are provided by Telkomsel in the front yard of Grapari Telkomsel Palu at Jl. Professor Muhammad Yamin No. 9, South Palu, North Lolu, Palu.
Additionally, PLN through its subsidiary Icon+ has also activated half of the internet network in Talise, Palu, Central Sulawesi. According to Tribunnews.com, the company's Wi-Fi facility boasts a bandwidth of 50Mbps and six access points. (kes)
