ommenting on a discussion with Swiss President Doris Leuthard on Islam and pluralism, Usman Hamid wrote an article in The Jakarta Post, July 26, entitled “Toward a more open society”.

I think that President Leutthard’s visit to Indonesia was important because to development of discourse on of freedom of religion, especially in light of the controversial inaret referendum in her country.

Is freedom of religion in Indonesia still in question? Is it true that religious intolerance seems to be growing in Indonesia? To me, all Muslims, wherever they live, including in Indonesia, are very tolerant.

Muslims become resistant if they are attacked, or if Islamic dignity is abused. Who is actually intolerant, Muslims or Westernized human rights “vendors”?
