ormer Bank Indonesia (BI) deputy governor Budi Mulya, who has been given a 10-year prison term for his role in the controversial 2008 Bank Century bailout, was temporarily released from lockup on Monday to pay his last respects to his son Benny, who died of leukemia.
Donning a white, long-sleeved shirt and a black cap, Budi, who was escorted by a Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) detention center official, broke down in tears soon after arriving at the Karet Bivak cemetery in Jakarta on Monday afternoon, where Benny, who died after undergoing two months of medical treatment at a Jakarta hospital, was buried.
Budi remained silent throughout the funeral.
Other members of his family, including his wife, Anne, and daughter, Nadia, a model and television personality, attended the funeral, consoling one another over the loss of the 32-year-old Benny.
'He was given permission by the KPK to attend the funeral,' Budi's lawyer, Luhut Pangaribuan, said on Monday.
KPK spokesman Johan Budi confirmed that the antigraft body had given the go-ahead, saying: 'We have let him out of detention because the departed is a family member.' Budi has yet to be transferred from the KPK detention center to prison to serve his sentence because he has appealed the verdict.
The KPK said that as soon as his verdict was final and binding he would be sent to prison.
Budi is the first suspect to be convicted in the multitrillion-rupiah bailout case, in which Vice President Boediono, who served as BI governor when the bailout decision was made, has been implicated.
