Civil lawsuit against JIS begins

T

he first hearing of a civil lawsuit filed against the Jakarta International School (JIS) by the mother of a child who was allegedly sexually assaulted by six outsourced cleaners and two JIS teachers, was held Tuesday at the South Jakarta District Court.

According to the lawsuit, the mother is seeking US$124 million in damages for the physical and psychological trauma her son experienced due to the assaults, which allegedly took place on the school'€™s grounds.

The hearing was attended by representatives from JIS and the Danish outsourcing company, PT ISS, as reported by tribunnews.com. Neither the mother nor the victim attended the hearing; they were instead represented by their lawyer, Andi Asrun.

JIS'€™ lawyer said that the school had asked the court'€™s judges to include PT ISS in the lawsuit because six of their cleaners had been accused of the crime.

'€œThe panel of judges will decide whether or not PT ISS will be included in the lawsuit after they have heard [the company'€™s] testimony,'€ he said.

Proceedings have been adjourned until next Tuesday, when the judges will hear the firm'€™s response to JIS'€™ request.
