Less than two months before he concludes his 10 years in office, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono celebrated his 65th birthday on Tuesday during which he received at least two pleasant birthday surprises: A cheerful congratulatory song from dozens of children in a hospital and an offer to lead an international organization.
The President had a normal working schedule on his special day. In the morning, he opened a new maternity facility at the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM) in Central Jakarta and just after he delivered his speech, a group of children appeared on the scene and played 'Happy Birthday' on traditional angklung musical instruments.
Some other kids flashed up cardboard signs saying 'Happy 65th Birthday', while Health Minister Nafsiah Mboi also wished the outgoing President many happy returns.
Earlier, First Lady Ani Yudhoyono posted a video clip featuring a number of pictures of Yudhoyono when he was in military service, his family, as well as his meeting with United States President Barack Obama, with an Ebiet G. Ade song as backing track.
His youngest son, Edhie 'Ibas' Baskoro, also posted on his Twitter account 'Happy Birthday Pepo
@SBYudhoyono. Long life, always be healthy, successful and happy, and may you always be under Allah's protection'. Ibas also added emoticons depicting a confetti ball and a family.
This year's birthday passed without the presence of his eldest son, Agus Harimurti, and wife Annisa Pohan, as the two are currently in the United States where Agus is attending a one-year course at the US Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Annisa wished who she described as 'the most amazing man in the world' a happy birthday via Twitter and Instagram accounts, thanking him for his guidance and direction all the time. 'You always shine so brightly in our family. Take time to relax and enjoy your day! Birthday wishes and blessings are coming your way.' Annisa also posted a similar video clip of pictures.
Agus, however, as of Tuesday night, had not posted any birthday wishes on his Twitter account. His last post was on Aug. 10 marking his own birthday.
President-elect Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo was quoted by tempo.co at City Hall in Jakarta as saying 'Happy birthday Pak SBY'.
Yudhoyono's birthday lit up social media outlets with hundreds of birthday wishes being posted and the hashtag #HBDSBY becoming one of the top-three trending topics on Twitter in Indonesia as of Tuesday at around 7 p.m.
Later on Tuesday, Yudhoyono received another present when he was visited by Yvo de Boer, the director general of the treaty-based international organization, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). The South Korean-based organization has offered to nominate Yudhoyono as its president for the next two years.
De Boer told a press conference that he 'cannot think of anyone better to lead this institution than President Yudhoyono of Indonesia', arguing that Yudhoyono fit the profile of a chairman for an organization that aimed to find a way to lift people, particularly those in developing countries, out of poverty and protect the environment at the same time.
