n the heels of the dismissal of corruption suspectSuryadharma Ali from his position as United Development Party (PPP) chairman, the camp of President-elect Joko "Jokowi" Widodo indicated that itwould welcome the Islamic party.

Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) deputy secretary general Hasto Kristiyanto, who is also a deputy head of Jokowi-Kalla's transition team, said that the PPP's chance to jump ship was big.

"[Former PPP chairman] Hamzah Haz was the vice president during the presidency of [PDI-P chairwoman] Megawati [Soekarnoputri]. The two have also maintained good communication to today. So the chemistry is still there," Hasto said.

"We'll see if Suryadharma's dismissal will indeed end up with the party joining Jokowi-Kalla."

An executive meeting at the headquarters of PPP, currently a member of the Red-and-White coalition supporting losing ticket Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa, decided Wednesday early morning to dismiss Suryadharma. The meeting also appointed deputy chairman Emron Pangkapi, known to oppose Suryadharma, as acting chairman. (nfo)
