ormer Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum appeared to tryto keep calm when prosecutors asked the Jakarta Corruption Court to sentence himto 15 years in prison and pay a Rp 500 million fine or serve an additional fivemonths for his roles in number of graft cases.
Anas was also asked by prosecutors to reimburse Rp 94.1 billion and US$5.2 million to the state, with the state confiscating all of his belongings to cover the amount in the event he failed to do so. If the confiscated belongings still could not cover the penalty, then Anas would be forced to serve an additional four years behind bars.
'We ask the justices to sentence him to a prison term as there's enough evidence to prove that he's guilty of graft and money laundering,' prosecutor Yudi Kristiana told the court on Thursday.
The prosecutors said Anas received gratuities in series of projects, such as the Hambalang sport center construction project and others.
Anas, according to the prosecutors, was also proven to have received gratuities in the form of a Toyota Harrier SUV and a Toyota Alphard Vellfire MPV, as well as Rp 116 billion and U$5.2 million and another Rp 30 billion and $5.2 billion from former Democratic Party treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin for his role in assisting the Permai Group to acquire state-funded projects.
As for the money laundering allegations, Anas was also charged with spending his ill-gotten money to purchase a two luxury houses in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta and two plots of land located in Mantrijeron, Yogyakarta.
Anas had also purchased two other plots of land in Yogyakarta and wanted to start a mining business in Kalimantan.
Commenting on the sentence demand, Anas criticized the prosecutors' request that he pay reimbursements.
'This is beyond my wildest imagination as it originates from a single testimony from Nazaruddin. This is more an expression of anger and hate instead of justice for me,' he said. (dic)
