onstruction of the double-track railway in Java should be accelerated because it will support economic growth, Deputy Transportation Minister Bambang Susantono said Wednesday.

'€œThe double-track railway construction in northern Java is almost complete. We certainly hope that the next administration will finish these projects,'€ Bambang said at a seminar discussing the national logistics system.

According to Bambang, the construction of double-track railways in the northern and southern parts of Java is considered important and strategic because 60 percent of the national economy is still centered in Java.

The construction will also reduce the burden on road transportation, in addition to improving the efficiency and competitiveness of train transportation.

The construction of double-track railway linking the northern coast of Jakarta to Surabaya, East Java, is already complete, making travel between these two cities relatively quicker.

'€œA number of regents in the northern parts of Java have said the double-track railway has boosted economic sectors, such as tourism and investment,'€ Bambang said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Meanwhile, construction of double-track railways in southern Java, connecting Jakarta to Surabaya, is still underway.
