he Health Ministry's Health Research and Development Agency (Balitbangkes) announced on Wednesday evening that lab tests conducted on a suspected Ebola patient in Medan had all come back negative.
'This indicates that the patient was not suffering from Ebola,' Balitbangkes head Tjadra Yoga Aditama announced in a statement released on Wednesday evening.
The patient, with the initials NN, who came from Deli Serdang regency in North Sumatra, died at the Adam Malik Hospital in Medan on Tuesday evening after undergoing treatment for three days.
His body was buried immediately after doctors had pronounced him dead. One of the hospital's internists, Yosia Ginting, who oversaw NN's case, said the cause of the death was malaria (malaria palcifarum) as well as brain, kidney and liver malfunction.
NN was admitted to the hospital's isolation ward on Sept. 7. He was exhibiting high fever, yellowing to the whites of his eyes and loss of consciousness, having returned home from Nigeria on Aug. 27. He had worked in Nigeria for four years as a food supervisor.
