resident-elect Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo has praised the government's decision to cancel the purchase of Mercedes-Benz sedans for members of the next Cabinet, citing unnecessary spending.
'It is a good move. It means we can start saving state budget funds [for more important things] Jokowi said at City Hall on Thursday as quoted by kontan.co.id.
Previously, the current government had chosen Mercedes-Benz to provide the official vehicles for Cabinet members in a deal amounting to Rp 91.94 billion (US$7.77 million), whereby the German carmaker would provide 72 E-Class 400 type cars.
Jokowi had voiced his opposition to the procurement of the new vehicles to State Secretary Sudi Silalahi, saying that he wanted his Cabinet members to use the vehicles currently being used, which are Toyota Crown Royal Saloons.
Jokowi, the current Jakarta governor and former Surakarta mayor, said he wanted his officials to have a good work ethic without the distraction of unnecessary facilities.
After receiving considerable media attention, the government dropped the plan to procure the luxury cars. (dyl/nfo)
