he city administration collected more than Rp 12.5 million (US$1,056.63) in the first three days of imposing heavy fines for illegal parking.
Since Monday the city has imposed heavy fines for illegal parking, with drivers who have their illegally parked vehicles towed away having to pay a fee of Rp 500,000 (US$42.71) for each day their car is impounded. The drivers are given a virtual bank account into which to pay the fine via city-owned Bank DKI.
Jakarta Transportation Agency head Muhammad Akbar said on Thursday that the city had towed away 42 cars within three days.
'Within the first two days, 17 cars were towed and the drivers paid immediately, meaning that we collected Rp 12.5 million. The next day we towed 25 cars and I believe most of them have paid the fines by now,' he said.
Akbar said the money collected would be used as city income.
