entral Statistics Agency (BPS) head Suryamin predicts that the hike in the price of 12-kilogram liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) canisters may drive up inflation at the end of this month.
'A fuel-price hike may result in inflation at the end of this month,' Suryamin said on Thursday.
However, he did not mention the expected rate increase.
'The fuel-price increase will cause other goods to see price increases. This is similar to fuel-price hikes that boost inflation,' Suryamin remarked.
He noted that the fuel-price increase would have both direct and indirect impacts.
'The direct impact will be felt by household consumers who use 12-kg LPG canisters to cook. The indirect impact will be felt by consumers in the food business sector that use gas,' Suryamin noted.
Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Susilo Siswoutomo has said the price of 12-kg LPG canisters will be gradually increased until an economically viable price is reached.
State-owned oil and gas firm PT. Pertamina raised the price of 12-kg LPG canisters by Rp 1,500 per kg on Wednesday, Sept.10.
