heCentral Java Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has deployed watertrucks to several areas in the province that are currently suffering watershortages. They include Jepara, Kebumen, Temanggung, Blora,Kendal, Rembang, Demak, Grobogan, Kudus, Pati, Wonogiri and Brebes regencies.
The Central Java BPBD's Indra Surya said the agency had already dispatched trucks carrying up to 1,670 tanks of water to the affected areas.
'We predict that the water crisis may get worse, as the dry season normally peaks in October,' Indra told The Jakarta Post on Friday. He added that some of the water shortages in certain areas were due to dry wells.
Residents in some affected areas, such as Degan village in Pati regency, reportedly lined up for a long time as they awaited the BPBD's water deliveries.
The agency has prepared 3,000 tanks of fresh water for affected areas in Central Java and has been distributing the water since last week. About 100 tanks of water were distributed to three areas in Demak regency last week.
Meanwhile, the BPBD's emergency division head, Gembong Purwanto Nugroho, predicted that this year's dry season would last until November.
'The shortages are not occurring in all areas of these regencies, only in some parts of them,' Gembong explained.
Besides distributing water, the BPBD will also be providing assistance to people to build new wells and install water pipes in their homes so that they can obtain fresh water at the turn of a tap.(dyl/dic)
