resident reported Education and Culture MinisterMuhammad Nuh to the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) on Fridayfor a textbook that allegedly discriminates against Indonesians of Arabicheritage.
'I represent a Surakarta resident, Muhsin Al-Jufri, who has felt discriminated against in the textbook,' said Muhsin's lawyer, Arief Sahudi, on Friday as quoted by tempo.co.
The textbook in question is an Indonesian language electronic textbook (e-book) for ninth graders that has been in circulation since 2008.
Arief said that on page 110 the book cited a novel that portrayed a character with an Arabic name, Syekh Abdullah, as a loan shark. The portrayal, according to Arief's client, Muhsin, created a bad image of Arabs in Indonesia.
'For students, the ministry should pick stories that educate them,' said Arief.
Muhsin demanded that the ministry withdraw the book and issue a public apology.
