Tanahdatar Deputy Regent Irdinansyah Tarmizi said the damage was located in the three districts of Batipuh, Sepuluh Koto and Pariangan. Batipuh faced the brunt as it was closest to the quake's epicenter.
'The walls and ceilings of some houses have collapsed, there's cracks on the floor and walls and shifts in structure,' Irdinansyah told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
No fatalities were reported, but several people suffered light injuries. 'However, we urge residents to be careful as according to the BMKG [Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency], there may be aftershocks,' he said.
The Tanahdatar regency administration has imposed a one-week emergency response period until Sept. 17. The earthquake's epicenter was located 14-kilometers (km) northwest of Tanahdatar and 17 km southeast of Padangpanjang city.
