overnor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama has asked city-owned property developer PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro) to buy shares of Jakarta soccer club Persija, following its declining performance on the field.
Ahok said that Jakpro would purchase shares of PT Persija Jaya and help improve its management, thus contributing to improving players' performance on the field.
'We're currently preparing Jakpro to buy shares of Persija. I've asked Jakpro commissioners to look into the plan,' Ahok told reporters at City Hall in Central Jakarta on Monday, as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Although Persija is Jakarta's official soccer club, the city administration and its firms currently do not have shares in Persija Jaya and thus cannot easily help in funding the club's activities or overseeing its management.
Shares of Persija Jaya are mostly privately owned by several individuals, who are also officials at the club. Ahok said that the city would be able to fund and manage Persija more easily if Jakpro had shares in the club. (***)
