he city administration will ask state-owned contractor PT Adhi Karya to dismantle steel pillars built for a planned monorail system in 2004 along Jl. HR Rasuna Said and Jl. Asia Afrika in South Jakarta as the unfinished pillars are considered an eyesore.
Regional secretary Saefullah said that after sending a letter to PT Jakarta Monorail (JM) to cancel the monorail construction, the city would also ask Adhi Karya to remove the unfinished steel pillars. Adhi Karya was the project contractor for the monorail system.
'The pillars are useless and are an eyesore to passersby. The pillars were not built using the city or state budget, therefore there will not be any state losses if the pillars are dismantled,' Saefullah told reporters at City Hall in Central Jakarta on Monday as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
The problematic monorail project began in 2004 under then governor Sutiyoso.
Construction resumed in October 2013, with JM as contractor. However, its construction failed to progress following disagreements between the city and the company.
Moreover, the city administration is doubtful of the company's ability to fund the project and recently Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama proposed the construction of light rapid transit instead. (***)
