he Jakarta Legal Aid Foundation (LBH Jakarta) has said President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo should not let anyone, including his party, prevent him from realizing the election promises that he and his coalition had once made to the people of Indonesia in trying to win the 2014 election.
'President Jokowi should have been fully aware that his ambitious economic development programs could not be realized without law enforcement and respect for human rights,' the head of case handling division at LBH Jakarta, Muhammad Isnur, said Tuesday.
He said President Jokowi must immediately give a target for and evaluate the work performance of his Cabinet members. The President should also dismiss ministers and the attorney general, who were not competent enough to immediately inaugurate the National Police chief candidate deemed best.
'It must be done, otherwise, his administration in the next five years will be just the same as what has been achieved in the first 100 days of his administration. It's all in vain,' said Isnur.
He said the first 100 days of the Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla administration had been filled with various controversies, including the appointment of a law and human rights minister and an attorney general from political parties, as well as the selection of a single National Police chief candidate who had a bad track record.
'Initially, the creation of Jokowi's Cabinet had run relatively transparently; he requested the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) to give input. Unfortunately, the two institutions had not been involved with the appointment of National Police and Attorney General candidates,' said Isnur.
He said Jokowi's attitude, which offered Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan as the only National Police chief nominee despite his corruption allegations, created a sense that the President did not take sides with the KPK.
LBH Jakarta director Febi Yonesta said during its first 100 days, the Jokowi-Kalla administration's performance in the field of law enforcement was disappointing.
'Its first 100 days should have created momentum for Jokowi-Kalla to show the commitment of the new administration,' said Febi. Instead, the activist said, Jokowi had been busy defending unpopular public officials nominated into his administration to recompense benefits he had received during his presidential campaign.
