Syafii Maarif to chair presidential fact-finding team

A

former chairman of Indonesia'€™s second-largest Muslim organization, Muhammadiyah '€” Syafii Maarif '€” has been elected to chair a presidential fact-finding team tasked with investigating the mounting conflict between the National Police and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

Former Constitutional Court chairman Jimly Asshidiqie, also a member of the fact-finding team, said the team'€™s structure had been established with Syafii as chairman and him as deputy chairman.

'€œPak Syafii, as the most senior in the team, is elected as chairman and I am deputy chairman while Hikmahanto Juwana of the University of Indonesia is elected as secretary,'€ he said.

The team will be officiated by President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo and has targeted completing its task within one month.

'€œA draft presidential decree on the fact-finding team'€™s establishment has already been prepared and the President is expected to sign the decree upon his arrival from his North Sumatra visit on Wednesday,'€ Jimly said as quoted by kompas.com.

The team will have nine members, including the three executives. The six others are former deputy police chief Comr. Gen. (ret.) Oegroseno, former KPK chairman Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean, Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas, police observer Bambang Widodo Umar, sociologist Imam Prasodjo and former police chief Sutanto.

The President said recently that the independent team was formed to investigate the conflict between the police and the KPK and was expected to give input and recommendations on what should be done by the President to resolve it. (rms)(+++)
