The East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) provincial administration is planning to build a new airport on Adonara Island, East Flores regency.
"A team from the NTT Transportation Office has conducted surveys in three locations," head of NTT Transportation Office Richard Djami said on Wednesday as quoted by Antara news agency.
The most strategic location being surveyed was Lebo Buto in Witihama district, Richard said, adding that his office was given three-month deadline by the Ministry of Transportation to carry out the surveys and a feasibility study before making a presentation in Jakarta next July.
"I cannot explain the reason why the central government wants to build the airport on Adonara. NTT thus far has 14 airports, the most ever owned by any province in Indonesia," he said.
He said that that airport facilities could be built in all regencies as long as local administration provided the lands.
In Alor regency, for example, the government built two airports and the government had possibly taken into consideration various things for their construction, Richard said. (hhr)
