At least 10 people have died after an Air Force Hercules aircraft crashed into a busy residential area along Jl. Jamin Ginting in North Sumatra's capital of Medan.
According to an official at nearby Adam Malik Hospital, at least 10 body bags have arrived at the hospital.
'So far, we have received 10 body bags. We fear more will come,' said an official, refusing to be named.
A fire brigade squadron is still attempting to put out the fire on the Air Force's crashed Hercules cargo aircraft, which has ravaged several under-construction shop houses and a Toyota Fortuner SUV in the busy residential area.
According to airport authorities, the aircraft, registration number A1310, took off from the Soewondo Air Force Base, formerly the Polonia International Airport , towards Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands.
The aircraft was piloted by a Capt. Sandy, who had requested to return to the airport shortly after lift-off, according to airport authorities.
According to witnesses, the aircraft crashed at around 11:30 a.m. local time after it gradually lost altitude before nosediving.
The aicraft was made in 1964, according to the Air Force. (ren)(+++)
