new government regulation will require online businesses to register and secure a permit before they are allowed to operate, an official says.
The draft of the regulation, which is set to be issued in February 2016 at the latest, is currently being discussed by the Trade Ministry, the Communication and Information Ministry and the Law and Human Rights Ministry.
'After the regulation is issued, e-commerce traders will have to obtain a permit in accordance with applicable laws. Permits will be obtainable through registration with the Communication and Information Ministry,' said the Trade Ministry's director for enterprise development Fetnayeti as quoted by Tempo.co on Tuesday.
Fetnayeti said that registration for these businesses was necessary in order to better protect traders and consumers.
She said the law was a necessity, as current online trading practice were not supervised by the government.
Under the regulation, online businesses will be divided into three categories: merchants, electronic transaction providers and intermediary service providers.
The registration and permit requirements for online businesses will also apply to foreign businesses.
'Foreign merchants must secure a permit from the trade minister before starting an online business,' Fetnayeti said. (rad/ika)(++++)
