udges at the South Jakarta District Court on Thursday handed down a guilty verdict against Christopher Daniel Sjarief who was involved in a fatal accident in Pondok Indah, South Jakarta, killing four people in January.
Judge Made Sutrisna said that although Christopher was guilty of causing the accident and he could have sentenced him to one-and-a-half years' imprisonment, the defendant should not have to stay in prison, and instead spend two years on probation.
'The convict will not serve [time in prison] unless he repeats the crime during the probation period,' the judge read from the verdict during the hearing as quoted by kompas.com.
The decision that Christopher should not serve time in prison, according to Made, was based on him having offered an apology to the relatives of the victims and paid them compensation.
'The defendant has admitted all that he has done wrong and expressed his regret. He was polite during the court hearing,' Made added.
The accident occurred on Jan 20, when an Outlander Sport driven at high speed by Christopher hit a number of motorcycle riders on Jl. Iskandar Muda, near Pondok Indah, South Jakarta.
On May 5, Christopher was freed from South Jakarta Prosecutors' detention facility. He was prohibited from leaving the city however.
He was found guilty of violating Law No. 22/2009 on traffic and road transportation. (bbn)
