One KPK candidate a police suspect

O

ne of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) leadership candidates is currently under investigation from the National Police Criminal Investigation Directorate (Bareskrim Polri).

"If I'm not mistaken, one of them was made a suspect by our investigators two days ago," said Bareskrim Polri chief Budi Waseso at National Police Headquarters in Jakarta on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.

Budi refused to give the name of the candidate, for privacy reasons, saying only that their criminal record had been given to the KPK leadership selection committee (Pansel).

He also refused to reveal which case the candidate in question was a suspect in. He said only that it was a case currently being processed by Bareskrim Polri and that they had become a suspect based on the police'€™s investigation of them for their KPK candidature.

When asked whether the suspect is one of the 19 candidates in the final selection phase, Budi said that he did not know.

"I don't know who those 19 candidates are. What matters is that we have submitted the records of the 48 candidates to Pansel," said Budi.

Previously, Budi had stated that the police would announce their investigation results to the public if Pansel recommended any candidates who had been red-flagged by Bareskrim. He stressed that their investigation is not merely a formality and was intended as a reference for Pansel to use when picking the next KPK heads.

Separately, Pansel member Yenti Garnasih said on Friday that the submission of the candidates' names to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo will be delayed due to administrative issues.

"The President already had an engagement outside Jakarta on Aug. 31 [date of submissions]," said Yenti at the State Secretary office as quoted by tempo.co.

She added that the delay will last no more than one week.

"The President will have two weeks to review our results. In three months'€™ time, he will submit his views to the House of Representatives. We still have until mid-December because that is when the current KPK commissioners'€™ tenures end," said Yenti.

Pansel finished interviewing all 19 remaining candidates for the KPK leadership on Wednesday. (kes)
