City police to deploy 8,000 personnel to guard labor demonstration

J

akarta city police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian has said that the city police will deploy at least 8,000 police officers to guarantee that the planned labor demonstration on Sept. 1 will run smoothly as the action will occur on a working day.

'€œMembers of trade unions want to voice their aspirations through a demonstration in limited public space. Therefore, we hope that they [police] can help them to carry out their action while respecting public order,'€ Tito was quoted by kompas.com as saying.

He expressed hope that the labor demonstration would not turn violent and cause problems for the general public.'€œAt least, 8,000 personnel are to be deployed. But we can add more if they are needed,'€ he said,

Confederation of Indonesian Workers Unions (KSPI) chairman Said Iqbal said that the workers would gather at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle and march to the Presidential Palace, and also visit the Manpower Ministry and Health Ministry offices.

The workers will call on the government to lower the price of essential goods and fuel. They will also protest layoffs due to the weakening rupiah and the economic slowdown. Other demands include the revision of government regulation (PP) on pensions so that workers'€™ pension plans are similar to civil servants. (bbn)(++++)
