Corrosion was previously reported on a cable in the elevator that crashed on Thursday, claiming two lives, in an office building in South Jakarta.
South Jakarta Police criminal investigation unit chief Adj. Sr. Cmr. Audie Latuheru said that based on a preliminary investigation, rust had been detected by city building safety authorities and reported to the building management.
"One of the notes by city officials states there was rust on the main cable and on Sunday engineers conducted maintenance and changed the cable," he said as quoted by newsportal kompas.com.
Audie said that based on information from the elevator engineers, the main cable had been replaced with a new one.
"We don't know if it was corroded or not," he said adding that it would be examined by the National Police's forensic laboratory.
The crash occurred on Thursday morning at Tower B of the Nestle building in the Arkadia Green office complex on Jl. TB Simatupang. Two people were killed and one was injured in the fatal crash.
The elevator was ascending from the third floor to the seventh floor when it crashed.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Cmr. Mohammad Iqbal identified the dead victims only as DS and KA, employees of PT Nestle Indonesia.
The survivor, who worked for the building's cleaning service, has been identified only as AR and is currently being treated at the Marine Hospital in Cilandak. (rin)
