The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has praised Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said for frequently returning 'questionable gifts', which they said came from various parties, but mostly mining businesses.
Among gifts he has returned to the anticorruption body, was a diamond worth Rp 4 billion (US$286,570), tempo.co reported. The KPK did not mention the exact number of gifts Sudirman had returned to the institution.
'Pak Sudirman is the most diligent minister in terms of returning gifts. We do not classify the value of each item, but he is an obedient official, who reports [the gifts],' said KPK prevention deputy Pahala Nainggolan, while attending an anticorruption Festival in Bandung on Thursday.
According to Pahala, there are only few ministers and officials who frequently report gifts. 'This year, there have been 1,200 officials who reported gifts to the KPK with the value of the gifts ranging from Rp 50,000 to the biggest one that was returned by Pak Sudirman,' Pahala added.
The majority of those who returned gifts were executives of regional or state-owned enterprises, said Pahala, adding that no gifts had been reported to the KPK by governors, mayors or regents.
He said that the KPK would continue to encourage government officials to report gifts or bribes they received to the KPK, but added that it would be better if officials directly rejected the gifts or bribes in the first place as it was not easy to report and return them to the KPK.
'To make such a report is not easy because five KPK commissioners have give their signatures. Imagine if all the KPK leaders had to sign for reported gifts worth Rp 100,000,' he added.
Sudirman has been under the spotlight recently after he reported House of Representatives Speaker Setya Novanto to the House ethics council for allegedly claiming to have won the approval of President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla to secure shares and projects from Freeport in exchange for helping the company extend its contract and continue operating its gold mine, one the world's largest, in Papua.
Reports on the issue have dominated headlines in the country recently as the House ethics council held hearings and summoned a host of the nation's elite to give testimony. (bbn)
