Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan on Monday fulfilled the House of Representatives ethics council summons to give testimony as a witness about an alleged ethics violation involving House Speaker Setya Novanto.
In his testimony, Luhut clarified his involvement in the negotiation of a work contract extension for gold and copper mining firm PT Freeport Indonesia.
Luhut reportedly arrived at the House ethics council room in the House complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta, at 1 p.m. on Monday. The minister was accompanied by Yorris Raweyai, a deputy chairman of the Golkar Party splinter faction led by Agung Laksono, and several staff members of the Office of the Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister.
Shortly after he arrived at the House compound, Luhut walked to the council's waiting room without giving any information to journalists who had been waiting for him. The House ethics council started the session, which was open to the public, at 1:30 p.m. with Sufmi Dasco Ahmad as the hearing chief.
During the session, Luhut denied any involvement in the negotiation of Freeport's work contract extension.
"When I was presidential chief of staff, I recommended the President [Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo] to assess Freeport's work contract extension since the government still has enough time to discuss it until 2019," he told to the council Monday.
Earlier, House ethics council deputy chair Junimart Girsang stated Luhut's testimony had been urgently needed since his name was mentioned 66 times in a recorded conversation between Setya and Freeport president director Maroef Sjamsoeddin that took place in a meeting in Jakarta on June 8, which was apparently attended by oil and gas tycoon Mohammad Reza Chalid.
"His name was mentioned 66 times. Certainly, this shows that [Luhut had] interest in the process. We want to dig into it further," said Junimart before Luhut's hearing on Monday.
Luhut's name is among several frequently mentioned in a taped conversation that revealed Setya's attempts to benefit from the negotiations wtih Freeport. (ebf)(+)
