The number of tourist arrivals in Yogyakarta is expected to increase by 12 percent during this holiday season, according to Yogyakarta Mayor Haryadi Suyuti.

"The increase won't be as significant as the recent Idul Fitri holidays, especially since the end of the year coincides with the rainy season," Haryadi told Antara news agency in Yogyakarta on Monday.

In addition to limited parking space, Haryadi cited traffic congestion in popular tourist spots such as Tugu Yogyakarta monument and Titik Nol (Point Zero) areas as important issues that needed to be resolved to welcome the large crowds.

In an effort to tackle the issues, the city administration is currently expanding the Abu Bakar Ali parking lot near the Malioboro tourist area.

"Hopefully the development will be completed before Dec. 20," said Haryadi.

Besides Abu Bakar Ali, other spots have also been prepared to host large numbers of tourists such as Senopati, Sriwedani and Ngabean parking areas. (nov/kes)
