Dec. 11, 2015

Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan expressed his fury following his name being dragged into the scandal involving gold and copper mining giant PT Freeport Indonesia and the speaker of the House of Representatives.

Luhut said on Friday that he was outraged that his name had been linked to the alleged conspiracy that has put House Speaker Setya Novanto in the spotlight.

'€œI am utterly disgusted and my family is angered, and so are my sons who are in the military. This is outrageous,'€ he said in a press conference at his office in Jakarta.

Luhut claimed that he had not done anything that contravened his principles in serving the country.

Your comments:

Soon after his military career ended Luhut was able to found with savings from his salary PT Toba Sejahtra Group, with three core activities: Natural resources (oil, gas and mining), electricity generation (coal, gas and geothermal)  agriculture.

He also likes to rub shoulders with Bakrie, Prabowo, Setya (of course).

This court of the ethics council has devolved into another embarrassment for Indonesia. Clearly, there is no real intent to get to the bottom of this matter. Getting angry and denying things does not mean he is innocent.

If he were, he would be demanding Setya and Reza do jail time for defaming his name. After all, you can get sued for defamation for looking sideways at people in Indonesia.

He seems angry at the exposure of the crime rather than the mouthpiece abusing his good name.

It'€™s very strange for an innocent victim.

Bohon-Bohong

'€œLuhut was accompanied by members of the ethics council during the press conference. They were Kahar Muzakkir, Adies Kadir and Ridwan Bae.'€  What a joke. The judges who will decide on Luhut'€™s fate, by his side with support! The mind boggles.

Goneasia

Only last month he took a potshot at his Cabinet colleague Sudirman Said describing Sudirman'€™s report against Setya as strange, '€œaneh'€.

He was cool as a cucumber and claimed to be not the least affected by it all, he even attended Setya'€™s daughter'€™s wedding reception, despite the conspicuous absence of his boss Jokowi and Kalla from the event.

Then a couple of days ago Jokowi decided to come out strong saying he was upset his name being used in the Freeport meetings. Yesterday news broke that Sudirman was one honorable chap returning gifts he received to KPK, including a very expensive diamond ring.

Suddenly our Luhut felt he was left out by the party. He quickly summoned this press conference to arrogantly announce his rage and fury at his name being tossed about in the recording, affecting even his family and his military sons (who would not be affected if there were not in military).

As with what you said of Sudirman, you are one strange man too Mr. Luhut.

Wandering Star

Ridwan Bae is the leader of the group trying to disrupt the hearing and have everything against Setya dropped. Now he is by Luhut'€™s side.

Something not good is up here. Luhut should have been embarrassed having such people at his side. I guess not.

Simaging

It is up to the West Papuan people to decide whether they want to extend Freeport'€™s contract and how much of the shares should be divested to West Papua.

Indonesian politicians like Setya Novanto and retired general Luhut Panjaitan bicker over money that does not belong to them. Neither does it belong to Indonesia.

The negotiations over the extension of contract should exclusively concern Freeport and the West Papuan people.

Silvio Bari

His clarification raises questions of his true involvement rather than exonerating him.

His presence at the wedding, indifferent and unconcerned by the controversy, adds suspicion or lend some credibility to allegations of his possible role.

That he mentioned his sons are in the military '€” so unrelated to the core issue, raises question of good judgment.

I hope he is a trustworthy and credible assistant to Jokowi and not part of the scheme allegedly being plotted by SN.
