Amid an ongoing review of the government's suspension of the Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI), President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has yet to take a stance on the latest Supreme Court ruling rejecting Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi's cassation appeal.
"All I can say is that the legal decision must be respected," presidential spokesman Johan Budi said recently. "For any further details, it would be better to ask the Youth and Sports Ministry, which is responsible for following up any legal decision."
Youth and Sports Ministry spokesman Gatot S Dewa Broto said the ministry was still waiting to receive a copy of the Supreme Court ruling before announcing any further moves.
'We are being proactive. We have asked the court for a copy of the ruling,' Gatot told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
Gatot added that no lines of communication had as yet been opened up between the PSSI and the ministry regarding the matter.
The ministry is understood to be considering filing a case review to the court in relation to the ruling, which was in favor of the PSSI.
PSSI legal director Aristo Pangaribuan said the court ruling was legally binding, regardless of the ministry's plan to consider filing the case review.
The ministry had 21 hours before the ruling came into effect, Aristo noted.
'Even if the ministry opts to defy the ruling, in the next 21 hours the ruling will be enacted,' he said as quoted by tempo.co.
Gatot acknowledged that in theory, the ruling would come into effect immediately, meaning the ban on the PSSI would have to be overturned, but said he expected the association to wait until the ministry had had a chance to study the ruling.
The decision is the latest twist in a series of events that saw the PSSI banned by the government, and, consequently, saw all Indonesian soccer teams banned from international s competitions by world governing body FIFA.
On Monday, an appellate bench at the Supreme Court ' comprising three justices, Yulius, Hary Djatmiko and Irfan Fachruddin ' issued a ruling in favor of the PSSI, rejecting Imam's appeal against a Jakarta Administrative Court (PTUN) decision issued in last July ruling that Imam's decree on the PSSI ban was void.
In late February, the ministry delayed a decision to revoke the suspension of PSSI, claiming it needed more time to conduct a thorough study, as demanded by Jokowi.
