resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has nominated the head of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT), Comr. Gen. Tito Karnavian, to take the helm of the National Police to improve force's professionalism and performance, a spokesman confirmed on Wednesday.
Jokowi fielded Tito as the sole candidate for National Police chief to the House of Representatives on Wednesday, presidential spokesman Johan Budi SP said.
"The President's considerations in choosing Tito Karnavian is to increase the police force's professionalism to safeguard the public, improve law enforcement, especially regarding extraordinary crimes such as terrorism, drugs and corruption as well as to increase synergy with other law enforcement agencies," Johan said, adding that it was the President's prerogative to appoint the National Police chief.
The nomination of the former Jakarta Police chief was based on input from various parties, including the National Police, the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) and the public, he said. Tito's was among several candidates proposed by Kompolnas to the President.
Tito will be required to undergo screening by the House of Representatives. Should the lawmakers approve of his nomination, Tito will officially replace National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti, who retires on July 24. (rin)
