linching silver in the women’s 48 kg weightlifting category, Sri Wahyuni on Sunday became the first Indonesian to win a medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
To win the medal, Wahyuni managed to keep a 188 kg bar from falling, while gold medalist Tanasan Sopita of Thailand succeeded in lifting a 200 kg bar, the Antara news agency reported.
Meanwhile, the bronze medal in the competition went to Japan’s Miyake Hiromi.
Weightlifting team manager Alamsyah Wijaya said Wahyuni had made a lot of progress, especially after the country’s weightlifting team received intensive training in South Africa last month.
Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi and Indonesian Olympic Committee chief Erick Thohir witnessed Wahyuni’s success at the event. (vny/ebf)
