resident Joko "Jokowi Widodo has called for immediate and substantial legal reform, saying it is key to improve the country’s judicial system.

Without extensive law reform, the President said, there would be distrust and disobedience from the people toward the legal system and law enforcement.

“It [distrust and disobedience of the judiciary] should not be allowed and should not happen, especially in today's era of competition and legal certainty. It [strong legal system] is important for a country to be able to compete at the regional level. To that end, there is no more choice, we must immediately carry out substantial legal reform from the highest to the lowest [levels],” said Jokowi.

Based on a global corruption perception index in 2015, Indonesia ranked 88th from countries surveyed, in which Denmark, Finland and Sweden were acknowledged the three least corrupt countries. On the rule of law index, Indonesia ranked 52nd.

Jokowi further highlighted three things the government had to pay close attention to in restoring the Indonesian public’s confidence in justice and legal certainty. They included regulatory arrangements, which aimed to produce quality laws and the inclusion of internal reform within law enforcement institutions.

“I also demand breakthrough measures in the prevention and settlement of all legal cases, such as corruption, past human rights abuses, people smuggling, forest fires and drug crimes," Jokowi stressed. (ebf)
