f convicted, 17 women from Morocco who were arrested by Jakarta immigration officials early on Friday on suspicion of being sex workers, each face a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison.
“We are still investigating their syndicate to prevent the spread of their [alleged] activities,” Tato Juliadin Hidayawan, the head of the Central Jakarta Immigration Office, said on Friday as reported by tribunnews.com, accusing them of violating the immigration law by misusing their visas.
The arrest of the 17 women occurred after officials received reports from people who suspected foreign prostitutes were operating out of a nightclub in Senayan, Central Jakarta. They were arrested on early Friday with several pieces of evidence.
“The fee was Rp 5 million (US$383)," Tato claimed. "They usually served expatriates.”
He added that the Central Jakarta Immigration Office had identified a number of places in central Jakarta, like Pasar Baru, Pacenongan, Tanah Abang and Gambir, where the foreign sex workers operated. (bbn)
