akarta gubernatorial candidate Anies Baswedan has said that he will continue to campaign on Friday despite the huge demonstration that is expected to occur against Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, who was accused of religious defamation.

"As long as the KPUD does not prohibit us, we will continue to campaign," said Anies at Rawa Belong flower market in West Jakarta on Wednesday.

Refusing to comment on the protest, Anies said he would focus only on his campaign and listening to the public's concerns of the city's problems.

In addition to visiting the flower market on Wednesday, Anies also visited some subdistricts in Kebon Jeruk district, West Jakarta.

During the visit, he listened to complaints from residents about the Healthcare and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) and the street vendors’ evictions. In response, Anies said he would focus on improving residents' education and welfare.

At the flower market, Anies said he vowed to organize a flower festival in the capital if he won the 2017 gubernatorial election. "We will create a flower festival as we want to make a lot of festivals. The festivals will boost the city's economy," he said, adding he even may designate a 'flower day' in the capital.

Anies said the traditional market should not lose its function in the modern era. “The city government can help the traditional vendors by managing the flower supply from outside Jakarta like Bandung and Sumedang in West Java,” he added. (bbn)
