mid lots of interest in joining a rally aimed at pushing for the arrest of Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama in a blasphemy case, the National Police are confident that enough personnel are on scene to ensure security.
"We have deployed a sufficient number of personnel to secure the event. There’s nothing to worry about," National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said on Friday at the National Monument (Monas) square, where the gathering is taking place.
As of 11 a.m., more than 200,000 protesters have flocked to the location.
Boy had said previously that a joint force of 22,000 law enforcement personnel would stand by across the capital during the event initiated by the National Movement to Safeguard the Indonesian Ulema Council’s Fatwa (GNPF-MUI).
The personnel would also secure a labor protest initiated by the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Unions (KSPI) in front of City Hall. (hwa)
