The Jakarta Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) is preparing two people to together moderate the second Jakarta gubernatorial election debate on Friday to enable them to explore more ideas from the candidate pairs.

Commission head Sumarno said on Tuesday the second debate would be moderated by former news anchor and TV host Tina Talisa and political science lecturer Eko Prasodjo.

“We have prepared two moderators so we can dig more into the questions,” Sumarno said at the commission office on Jl. Salemba in Central Jakarta.

Many observers criticized the first debate two weeks ago for failing to comprehensively explore ideas from the three candidate pairs. The first debate was moderated by Ira Koesno, who was also formerly a news anchor at a private television station.

Syamsuddin Haris, a political analyst from the Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI), said recently that the moderator should have been able to trigger and explore more ideas from the three pairs by, among other ways, asking them about programs they already raised on the campaign trail. He said, for example, the moderator could have asked candidate Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono in detail about the floating city he proposed to mitigate flooding, including how he would fund it.

The second debate is to explore candidates’ ideas about bureaucratic reform, the public service and urban planning. The commission has also extended the duration of speech from 90 to 120 minutes.
