rosperous Justice Party (PKS) president Sohibul Iman has called on people to appreciate Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’s contribution to the capital, whom he says has developed the city’s infrastructure.

However, he further said, there should be a change of leadership because Ahok had damaged relationships among Jakartans and posed a serious threat to societal unity with the various controversies he had become embroiled in.

“Every day he [Ahok] develops the physical infrastructure of the city, but he is also breaking our unity,” Sohibul told thousands of people who swarmed Banteng Square in Central Jakarta to attend a mass campaign event for Jakarta gubernatorial candidate pair Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno on Sunday.

During his tenure, Ahok has been criticized by rights group for having left marginalized residents for Jakarta’s development through his eviction policies.

Sohibul claimed the PKS, which supported the Anies-Sandi candidacy along with the Gerindra Party, had never discriminated people for their racial or religious backgrounds and would not hesitate to give them a chance to build Jakarta and serve its people.

“However, once they fail to do their job, a change must happen and Anies-Sandi is the answer for those who are looking for a leader who can develop the city and will take the side of the people,” he said, which was responded by a thunderous applause by the campaign participants.

Gerindra patron Prabowo Subianto and other officials from the Anies-Sandi campaign team, including campaign leader Mardani Ali Sera, also attended the event. (ebf)
